Planning sound for a wedding or event in Curaçao

Most events here happen outdoors or half outdoors: a beach ceremony, a garden reception, a terrace at a hotel. That's a big part of why people get married and hold events in Curaçao, and it's also why the sound needs a bit more thought than in a ballroom. Here's the checklist we run through with clients.

1. The ceremony: can everyone hear the vows?

  • Outdoors there are no walls to carry the sound, so even 40 or 50 guests need a small speaker system.
  • Wind is the enemy of microphones. Use windscreens, and for the couple and the officiant, a lavalier (clip-on) mic often works better than a handheld.
  • Have a second wireless microphone ready for readings and speeches.
  • Test everything at the actual spot, at the same time of day, before guests arrive.

2. The reception and party

  • Dinner needs background level; the dance floor needs real power. Plan speakers for both, or a system that can do both.
  • If a DJ or band is booked, agree in advance whose speakers are used and where they plug in.
  • Check the venue's sound curfew and volume rules. Many venues near homes have them.

3. Power

Ask the venue where power comes from and how much is available, especially on a beach or in a garden. Lighting, speakers, the DJ and the caterer all on one outdoor socket is a common cause of problems. Curaçao's mains is 127 V, 50 Hz; we explain what that means for equipment in this guide.

4. Lighting after sunset

The sun goes down early here, around 6 to 7 pm year-round, so most receptions run in the dark. Warm uplighting on trees, walls or the bar, and a bit of colour on the dance floor, change the whole feel of a venue and make your photos look better.

5. Family abroad

Many weddings here have guests who couldn't make the trip. A live stream with proper audio from the ceremony microphones lets them watch from home, and you keep the recording. See our live streaming page for how that works.

6. Book early

Weekends in high season fill up. Once your date and venue are fixed, lock in your sound, lighting and streaming.
